TRUMP BOMBS SYRIA AGAIN

APRIL 17TH, 2018

Trump ordered missile strikes on three chemical weapons facilities in Syria on April 13th, which followed a chemical weapon attack by Assad in the city of Damascus, as well as Trump’s previous statements to pull troops from Syria.

There appear to be mixed views on the matter as a whole, and Russian ambassador, Anatoly Antonov, announced, “We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences.” Previous to this statement, Trump had asked Syria’s allies, “What kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women and children?” and then followed it with, “The nations of the world can be judged by the friends they keep. No nation can succeed in the long run by promoting rogue states, brutal tyrants and murderous dictators.” Tensions appeared to increase in the days following the strike, but little more was done after Trump tweeted “Mission Accomplished!”

The strike involved a total of 105 missiles, and Syria claimed to have shot down at least 13 before they struck. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis added to Trump’s tweet as he announced that the missile strike was the only planned attack unless Assad continues to use chemical weapons in the Syrian civil war. Mattis also reinforced the fact that the attack was strictly on chemical weapons facilities, “We confined it to the chemical weapons-type targets,” and he continued with, “we were not out to expand this; we were very precise and proportionate. But at the same time, it was a heavy strike.”

The attack also involved Britain and France, but not Germany despite their own statements on the Assad regime and its use of chemical weapons.
